Things to Do in Horndean: Activities, Attractions & Days Out
From South Downs walks to local attractions, discover everything Horndean and the surrounding area has to offer

Horndean's location makes it an ideal base for exploring the South Downs, but the village and its immediate surroundings offer plenty of activities and attractions in their own right. Whether you're looking for outdoor adventures, family-friendly activities, or simply a pleasant afternoon out, here's what's on offer.
Queen Elizabeth Country Park
Just north of the village, Queen Elizabeth Country Park is Horndean's greatest outdoor asset. Covering over 1,400 hectares of woodland and downland, the park offers walking and cycling trails for all abilities. The visitor centre at the base of Butser Hill provides information, refreshments, and bike hire. Butser Hill itself, at 271 metres, is the highest point in Hampshire and offers spectacular 360-degree views. The park is free to enter, though parking charges apply.
Butser Ancient Farm
Adjacent to the country park, Butser Ancient Farm is a unique experimental archaeology site. Here you can explore reconstructed Iron Age roundhouses, a Roman villa, and Anglo-Saxon buildings, all built using ancient techniques. It's educational but genuinely fascinating, bringing history to life in a way museums rarely achieve. Special events throughout the year include Celtic festivals and hands-on craft activities. Excellent for families with curious children.
Keydell Nurseries
Horndean's largest garden centre, Keydell Nurseries on Havant Road, has become a destination in its own right. Beyond the plants and gardening supplies, you'll find a large café, gift shop, and seasonal displays. The Christmas section is particularly impressive. Even non-gardeners can happily spend a couple of hours browsing. Free parking makes it an easy stop.
St. Hubert's Church
For those interested in local history, St. Hubert's Church in Idsworth is a hidden treasure. This tiny 11th-century chapel contains remarkable medieval wall paintings depicting St. Hubert's legend. The remote, rural setting adds to its charm. It's a short drive from Horndean village and makes for a peaceful visit away from busier attractions.
Local Walking
Beyond the country park, numerous footpaths crisscross the area. The Staunton Way passes through the parish, connecting the South Downs to the coast. Local circular walks take in pretty hamlets like Blendworth, Chalton, and Finchdean. The disused railway line to Rowlands Castle provides a level, easy route suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
Sports & Fitness
Horndean Football Club welcomes spectators to non-league matches at Five Heads Park. Tennis courts are available at local recreation grounds. For swimmers and gym-goers, Cowplain Activity Centre is the nearest public facility. Several local fitness studios offer classes from yoga to HIIT. Golfers have options at nearby Rowlands Castle and Waterlooville clubs.
Family Activities
The recreation grounds on Five Heads Road feature play equipment for children. The Horndean library hosts regular story times and children's activities. During school holidays, Butser Ancient Farm and Queen Elizabeth Country Park run special family events. The Highland cattle grazing on Butser Hill are always a hit with children (and adults!).
Nearby Attractions
Horndean's location puts many Hampshire attractions within easy reach. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is about 20 minutes south. Chichester and its cathedral are a similar distance east. Marwell Zoo makes a great family day out. For shopping, Waterlooville town centre is just down the A3, while Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth offers outlet shopping and a cinema.
