Walking Routes from Horndean: South Downs Trails & Local Paths

Horndean sits at the southern edge of the South Downs National Park, making it an exceptional base for walking. The village offers access to a variety of trails, from short strolls to serious hikes. Here are some of the best walking routes, along with practical information to help you plan.

Butser Hill Summit Walk

Distance: 3.5 miles | Difficulty: Moderate | Time: 1.5-2 hours. Start from the Queen Elizabeth Country Park car park and follow the well-marked trail to the summit of Butser Hill. At 271 metres, it's Hampshire's highest point and offers extraordinary views in every direction. On clear days you can see the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth harbour, and deep into Sussex. The climb is steady but not too steep. Keep an eye out for Highland cattle and the abundant butterflies in summer. The circular route takes you through beech woodland on the descent.

Chalton & Windmill Hill Circuit

Distance: 5 miles | Difficulty: Moderate | Time: 2-2.5 hours. This lovely circular walk starts from Chalton village (The Red Lion pub is a good meeting point) and climbs onto Windmill Hill, the site of an ancient Bronze Age hillfort. The views across Hampshire are spectacular. The route passes through the hamlet of Idsworth, where St. Hubert's Chapel with its medieval wall paintings is worth a detour. Return via quiet lanes and field paths. Good underfoot in most conditions.

Horndean to Rowlands Castle Railway Path

Distance: 4 miles (one way) | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 1.5 hours. The disused railway line between Horndean and Rowlands Castle makes for an easy, level walk suitable for all abilities including pushchairs and wheelchairs. The tree-lined path is particularly beautiful in autumn. Start from the recreation ground on Five Heads Road and follow the path south. You can return the same way or catch a train from Rowlands Castle back to Petersfield/Havant.

Blendworth & Finchdean Loop

Distance: 6 miles | Difficulty: Moderate | Time: 2.5-3 hours. This circuit explores the quiet countryside east of Horndean. Start from the village and head through Blendworth, a tiny hamlet with a lovely church. Continue through farmland to Finchdean, where The George Inn provides an excellent refreshment stop. The return leg crosses undulating downland with views towards Stansted Forest. Some sections can be muddy after rain.

South Downs Way Access

Distance: Variable | Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging. The South Downs Way national trail passes through Queen Elizabeth Country Park, easily accessible from Horndean. From here you can walk east towards Winchester or west towards the Sussex coast. The section towards Harting Down is particularly scenic. Consider a linear walk with transport arranged at the other end, or tackle a challenging out-and-back route. The terrain is generally good but can be exposed in bad weather.

Catherington Down Nature Reserve

Distance: 2 miles | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 1 hour. This short circular walk explores Catherington Down, a Hampshire Wildlife Trust reserve just north of the village. The chalk grassland supports wildflowers and butterflies in spring and summer. It's a gentle route suitable for families and those wanting a shorter walk. Park near The Farmer Inn and follow the signed path.

Practical Information

Most walks are on public rights of way and well-signposted, but carrying an OS map (Explorer 120 covers the area) is advisable. Good walking boots are essential for longer routes, especially after rain. Queen Elizabeth Country Park has the best facilities including toilets, café, and visitor centre. Dogs are welcome on most paths but should be kept on leads near livestock. Several pubs along these routes provide excellent refreshment stops – The Red Lion at Chalton, The George at Finchdean, and The Farmer Inn at Catherington are all walker-friendly.
